Reviews
"[A] thoughtful debut novel [that] pits morality against passion . . . the perfect selection to jump-start some satisfyingly heated arguments within your book club." -- USA Today "The powerful writing imbues the tale with the terrible inevitability of a Greek tragedy." -- Chicago " Loving Frank reveals what we expect to get from great fiction: timeless truths about ourselves." --New York Daily News "In Mamah, Horan creates an unforgettably complex heroine." -- The Washington Post "A glory to behold." -- New York "The conclusion . . . is unexpectedly powerful." -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette "An impressive and admirable debut . . . If Frank Lloyd Wright is the reason people will pick up this book, Mamah Borthwick is the reason they will keep reading it . . . Loving Frank [is] a beautifully designed, innovative and noteworthy work of art." -- Chicago Tribune "It takes great courage to write a novel about historical people, and in particular to give voice to someone as mythic as Frank Lloyd Wright. This beautifully written novel about Mamah Cheney and Frank Lloyd Wright's love affair is vivid and intelligent, unsentimental and compassionate." --Jane Hamilton, author of When Madeline Was Young "Horan's nuanced evocation of these flawed human beings plays beautifully against the lurid facts of their situation. As in the best historical fiction, she finds both the truth and the heart of her story." -- Los Angeles Times "[Nancy Horan] does well to avoid serving up a bodice-ripper for the smart set. . . . She succeeds in conveying the emotional center of her protagonist, whom she paints as a protofeminist, an educated woman fettered by the role of bourgeois matriarch." -- The New Yorker " Loving Frank is one of those novels that take over your life. It's mesmerizing and fascinating--filled with complex characters, deep passions, tactile descriptions of astonishing architecture, and the colorful immediacy of daily life a hundred years ago--all gathered into a story that unfolds with riveting urgency." --Lauren Belfer, author of Ashton Hall "This gripping historical novel offers new insight into the mind of an American icon through the woman he loved." -- Parade "I admire this novel, adore this novel, for so many reasons: The intelligence and lyricism of the prose. The attention to period detail. The epic proportions of this most fascinating love story. Mamah Cheney has been in my head and heart and soul since reading this book; I doubt she'll ever leave." --Elizabeth Berg, author of The Story of Arthur Truluv "Using material gleaned from seven years of careful research, author Nancy Horan suceeds in getting inside the mind of Wright's 'soul mate' and making their relationship real." -- Desert Morning News " Loving Frank is a novel of impressive scope and ambition." -- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Advance praise for Loving Frank "This graceful, assured first novel tells the remarkable story of the long-lived affair between Frank Lloyd Wright, a passionate and impossible figure, and Mamah Cheney, a married woman whom Wright beguiled and led beyond the restraint of convention. Examination of Values

A friend said she had trouble getting into to it. Because I like mid-century modern style, I thought I’d read to see what I could learn about his motivation from any research that was in preparation for this book. I expected it to be like Anne Morrow Lindburg’s book about the journey with her husband, but it is the opposite. At first, I was disgruntled, but because I’m a retired English teacher, I never make total assessment until I have completed a book. The author has a gift of the turn of the phrase, mature, fluid sentence structure, always comfortable in reading. The content is similar to Sinclair Lewis’ Dodsworth. I’ve always liked Sinclair Lewis’ book and the movie Dodsworth. It is told through the eyes of a married woman who gives up everything beautiful in her life for an affair ...

  • I really loved "Loving Frank"

This is a fictional version of his life written by Nancy Horan. It is based on real facts she research on his life. He was a very colorful man and there was lots written about him, so her research was comprehensive. I loved this book, as I believe Frank Lloyd Wright who started his own firm by 21 years, was a genius who created a breakthrough in American Architecture. In fact, you might say he was responsible for American Architecture. The book also describes a very unusual woman Mamah Borthwich Cheney who was his longtime companion at a huge cost, as she forfeited contact with her children for many years. If you are looking for a book that gives you a glimpse life the 1030's-1940's-1950's, or a great gift, buy this book.

  • Loving Frank

A well-researched book and factually correct. The actual relationship between FL Wright and Mamah Brothwick comes from the author's imagination and may or may not be true. In spite of that it an interesting story about an unconventional couple who made headlines by deserting their spouses and families and pursuing their adulterous relationship. There is much to discuss in the book pertaining to relationships and personal desires as opposed to family commitments, how the relationship effected the career of a famous architect, the early days of the women's movement and how played a part in the relationship, the media involvement and effect it had on the couple as well as the families or was all this just acts of selfishness on their part? There is also much to discuss concerning the tragic ...

  • Awesome, thought-provoking read!

You get pulled right into Mamah Cheney's life - resist any temptation to google her or Frank Lloyd Wright or Taliesin. Do your investigating after you've finished to book. You'll ruin the ending and it's well worth being surprised. The author's contemporary handling of the lives she describes make it hard to remember this takes place in the 1908-1912 range. I always looked forward to getting back to these characters. Our book group read this and it sparked good discussions about infidelities, leaving one's children and the special rules Frank thought brilliant artists should be permitted by society.

  • Oldie but classic

What a stimulating attitude from a woman; kind, loving, but not meek. I couldn't wait to recommend to my sisters and old first love. They had all read years ago!
