Poor Girl Meets Rich Boy in Hollywood
We've seen poor boy meets rich girl in "Notting Hill". In "Pretty Woman" the roles are reversed and hooker Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) is transformed by billionaire Edward Lewis (Richard Gere). The twist in the story, naturally, lies in the extent to which the transformation is a mutual process. One glimpse of each of the principals is enough to foreshadow the simple plot. But the main theme is enlivened by mini-sub-plots that unroll as the inevitable takes its course. "Everyone has something to learn from someone" and "things are not as they seem" are fairly standard themes in romantic comedy, but in this film they blend harmoniously and sympathetically into a delightful composite with only 100 or so cornball moments. The cornball moments are, however, all acceptable and believable as the viewer is carried along by the sheer bubbly good nature of the film. Villains are revealed as villains; the good guys find their goodness in each other; the knight in shining armor even rides in on the roof of a Town Car. Cornball, sure - but a thoroughly enjoyable helping of good ripe corn.Read full review

Fine comedy
"Pretty Woman" is a funny comedy. There is no doubt that Julia Roberts is very sweet. Unfortunately, this is the same exact reason she shouldn't be playing roles of prostitutes. One thing that was really annoying was that at the beginning of this 10-th anniversary edition it was written "This movie has been modified from its original version: it has been edited for content". I am not sure what exactly was deleted because I never saw the original. I bought the movie, because I recently saw Julia Roberts in a Broadway show and got excited about her and decided i should own at least one of her DVD's.
