About this product

Product Information

Alan Rickman has a made a career of stealing scenes in supporting roles, but he takes the lead in SNOW CAKE. Whether he's playing Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movie or the voice of God in DOGMA, Rickman provides a fascinating combination of dry wit and gravitas that also serves him well here. Flanked by Carrie-Anne Moss and Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver, Rickman's performance provides the core of this character-driven drama. Though Weaver's best roles are as strong and independent women in films like the Alien quadrilogy and WORKING GIRL, she's fascinating to watch in her role as an autistic woman.Rickman plays Alex Hughes, a lonely man driving to Winnipeg to meet someone from his past. Along the way, he meets a spunky young woman named Vivienne who is desperate for a ride home to her mother. But a car accident leaves Vivienne dead and Alex full of guilt, and he goes to the small town of Wawa, Ontario, to meet Vivienne's mother. In Wawa, he discovers that her mother, Linda (Weaver), is an autistic woman. She convinces him to stay for a few days, and he meets her beautiful neighbor, Maggie (Moss). With the help of Linda and Maggie, Alex may be able to move beyond his troubled history. SNOW CAKE isn't for those who need an elaborate plot or explosions. Instead, it's a rewarding drama for adults that also features a great soundtrack from Broken Social Scene, Feist, Super Furry Animals, and the Stereophonics.

A look into the human soul

Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman are brilliant in this. While I'm a little jaded with star turns at 'Rain Man' type roles, Weaver really gives believable life to her character. Rickman is perfect as the tormented driver whose car was rammed, killing the young woman (the daughter of Weaver's character) to whom he had given a lift. He was already recovering from the unimaginably tragic effects of an earlier car that was rammed, taking the life of the son he hadn't known he had and whom he was on his way to meet when the son was killed. Despite the tragedy, this isn't about despair. There is, if not resolution, acceptance and understanding achieved, a way to go on going on with hope. It's rewarding to watch without being depressing or too pat.

  • "Dazlicous"

Hippie child Vivienne (the adorable Emily Hampshire) has a knack for finding the quiet souls in life -- the ones who have a story in there somewhere. When she gloms onto Alex Hughes (Alan Rickman) in a roadside cafe, she soon grows on the man who definitely didn't want to be glommed onto. Though at first he says no, he eventually yields to her request for a ride to get Vivienne closer to her mom's home. In a curious way, it's probably the best thing Alex has done for himself in a very long time. His long repressed smile and even a chuckle or two escape thanks to the vivacious Vivienne. But then the unthinkable happens. Alex's car is hit by a semi and young Vivienne is dead. Alex is compelled by his own guilt to make a visit to Vivienne's mother to explain what happened and console her, ...

  • Snow Cake doesn't reveal itself as the perfect title until the two lead characters separate to continuing becoming themselves.

No one does the development of his inner motivations and conflicts the way Alan Rickman achieved them. I could not believe I was seeing Susan Saradon as autistic. I'm ranking this right up with Song of Lunch for the final moment of insight that spares us from mourning the character.

  • Original, surprising, wonderful

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Stunning scenery, a great, highly original script, good acting- subtle, quiet, multi-layered, nuanced- crept right into my heart. Reminded me in some ways of another favorite, Bagdad Café. Through happenstance people come together and are changed as a result, and in surprising ways- unpredictable. Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky wrote decades ago about transformation in literature, wherein in some cases seemingly sad themes can produce the opposite effect, as if by magic. Though ostensibly about misfortune, loss, disability, and chasms between people, it's really about generosity and what's best in us, the better angels of our nature, as Abraham Lincoln said. Moving, inspiring, liberating, about the possibilities in life, yet so subtle the ...

  • Five stars

This is a movie I heard about from a friend who is also a fan of Alan Rickman. Sigourney Weaver should really have won an academy award for her portrayal of Linda. The whole cast is excellent and even though the subject is hard to watch in parts, this is a wonderful film.
