This season of Smallville is in my opinion, the best one yet. Not only does the introduction of Lois Lane add a factor to the show that hasn't been explored before but for the first time the characters really click (especially due to the fact of Lionel's downgraded status (he was only in 10 episodes). Episodes like Spell while on the surface don't do much to the overall arc of the season, add a fun, fluffy element to the show that was missing in seasons 2 & 3. There is a fair share of mythology episodes in this season, but all of them are leading up to something bigger. For the first time the writers and producers are prepping Clark for college and his future life at the Daily Planet. It is really interesting watching Season 4 of Smallville and Season 1 of "Lois and Clark" at the same time. If the show is given another four years or so, I think that this will probably be one of the most comprehensive Superman legends! Not to mention that fact that I would like to see a high schooler finish college.-copiedRead full review
I only caught bits and pieces of Smallville when it was on the air, initially, and have been rounding up the seasons in sequence as I get a chance. I'm pleased to see that the series, as a whole, is as engaging and enjoyable as the bits of it that I caught had made it seem (hard to follow shows when your work schedule is primarily evenings...) I found their addition of Lois Lane as a character in the fourth season to be a good choice...she, like all the other characters, is well-written, with a balance of strength, vulnerability, flaws, and virtues that made her fun to watch. A pre-Supernatural Jensen Ackles also plays into the mix this season, adding a whole new level of wrinkles to an already complicated mix. There were, naturally, some misses among the hits for the season, a couple of episodes felt like they belonged in a different series, almost...but it laid out more of the bits and pieces of the mythology of Superman...those familiar with the character will see a lot of moments that essentially lay the groundwork for well-known details in the comic storylines.Read full review

This is an excellent series. The acting is good. And of course the casting is superb with Tom Welling, Allison Mack, and Anette O'Toole. The DVD lets you see them intimately in wide screen with crisp details. I wish Clark would realize how much Chloe loves him and just take her away to his Fortress of Solitude in the arctic, and forget about that mercurial brunette Lana Lang. Let Lex have her! His stunningly beautiful mom, Martha Kent, should set him straight about what to expect from the lavish love of a young woman. And watch out for that most unusual character Mr. Mxyzptlk. I remember him from the comic books in the 1960s. And you will also find Krypto the dog, who was a super dog in print. And this is all family viewing. There is innuendo in this production that you might miss if you are not aware of the ancient history of the comics of the 1950s and 1960s. As we all know, Superboy's costume was created by his earthly mother, Martha Kent, from his blankets that wrapped him in the small spacecraft that brought Kal-El from the dying Krypton to earth. This super cloth never wears out and it stretched perfectly to form the leotard of the adult man of steel that the young Clark grows into. We never see this uniform in Smallville. But we do often see Clark draped in a bright red jacket with a royal blue polo shirt underneath that reminds the viewer of what came before. And there is even one episode in which the S mark by which we recognize Superman, appears on his bare chest like it is a burn scar. Only, it is a Kryptonian symbol that merely resembles an S inscribed in an assymetric pentagon that we would call a diamond. It is more like an infinity sign turned on its head. Even Krypto the dog, at the end of his episode, is shown receiving a bath, and afterwards he is dried off with a crimson red towel that is left to encircle him like the red cape we knew from the early days when he took flight on the paper pages we followed monthly for 12 cents an issue.Read full review
As a child Superman was my hero. As an adult, Superman is my hero. Heros have this way of following us through life. It is not particularly the character that follows us, the cape, the flying, the speed... but rather it is the principles that they embody. Superman stood for what was right and true and good and I'd like to think that those who are superman fans have taken those qualities with them as they have grown up. I've read the comic books, I watched Superman in black and white with George Reeves growing up. I watched the movies with Christopher Reeves. I've watched the Adventures of Lois and Clark. I'm a Superman fan yet not a fanatic. Tom Welling and this series portray a tremendous version of the epic hero growing up as a teenager and his transformation as he discovers himself. Smallville is a fantastic development of this great hero in all his glory. I am neither distracted nor disappointed that each and every episode does not follow exactly the comic book lore. The innovation and creativity give this series at 5 out of 5 stars in my book. If any true Superman fan didn't enjoy this series, I'd be surprised. The special effects, plot and acting are excellently melded to create an almost believable fantasy series. Hat's Off to the cast, crew and directors.Read full review
This is a great season of Smallville! Must have for any fan! This year we have a couple new people joining the cast: Jensen Ackles (From TVs Dark Angel, Supernatural) plays Lana's new love interest and also Erica Durance who plays Lois Lane. Tom Welling (The Fog, Cheaper By The Dozen) returns once more as farm boy Clark Kent who is not like anyone else on this planet. The new season starts with a Clark Kent who doesn't remember anything and is almost like a zombie and only remembers himself as Kal-El. The first episode rules cause we finally get to see Clark fly! Which is so cool since the producers said in the first few seasons "No tights, No flights". Between Lana's new man, meeting Lois Lane, Lana's mysterious tattoo, Graduation, Prom, Witches, and Krypto the dog, this season leaves little room for anything but exciting episodes! This season comes with 6 discs and special features (which is sad since there is no blooper reel on this season like all the others had). Must have season of Smallville!Read full review
