About this product

Product Information

An acclaimed translation of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy Volume 1: Inferno that retains all the style, power and meaning of the original A Penguin Classic This vigorous translation of Inferno preserves Dante's simple, natural style, and captures the swift movement of the original Italian verse. Mark Musa's blank verse rendition of the poet's journey through the circles of hell recreates for the modern reader the rich meanings that Dante's poem had for his contemporaries. Musa's introduction and commentaries on each of the cantos brilliantly illuminate the text. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

book shipped quickly and mostly as described; slightly more wear and tear to the cover than I'd expect for "good," but pages all intact and no marks on them

  • Mark Musa's translation

Mark Musa does an excellent job of using iambic pentameter which gives the poem consistency. He does an excellent job of explaining the myriad of characters mentioned by Dante Alighieri. This is an excellent book for a beginner coming to the subject for the first time. I would recommend this translation highly.

  • Disappointed

I was disappointed because the Divine Comedy, which is what the title says I was getting was incomplete because the Divine Comedy includes two other books. I've seen books with all three in them included in one volume. The discription should of read, The Inferno by Dante because that is what it really is. I assume it was just an oversight and not intentional. The quality of the volume I received was very good. Thanks

  • Inferno takes you to paradise

The translation is elegant, earthy and modern all at the same time. The text is annotated enough to enable an educated layman to enter the complex medieval symbolic world. The print and organisation of the tertia rima is a delight to the eye. The translation for our time.

  • Excellent

Excellent read, I would recommend that everyone read this timeless classic!! A true masterpiece in every way. I picked it up and was glued to it until the final page.
