The Death of Common Sense – one of my favorite titles!
Quite honestly, of all the nonfiction titles in the realm of political commentary which I’ve read, Philip K. Howard's “The Death of Common Sense” is quite possibly my very favorite title. The reasons are many, but I'll try to cover the main points in brief. First of all, Mr. Howard is a lawyer. And while that point may or may not endear him to you, his writing from the PERSPECTIVE of a lawyer will not only fascinate you, but also lend credibility to what he has to say. Secondly, Mr. Howard does not write from any particular political slant. There is no liberal or conservative viewpoint to taint the book or its message. And in the realm of political and social commentary, this is incredibly rare...and a breath of fresh air for those looking for a common sense (no pun intended) ... Quite honestly, of all the nonfiction titles in the realm of political commentary which I’ve read, Philip K. Howard's “The Death of Common Sense” is quite possibly my very favorite title. The reasons are many, but I'll try to cover the main points in brief. First of all, Mr. Howard is a lawyer. And in the realm of political and social commentary, this is incredibly rare...and a breath of fresh air for those looking for a common sense (no pun intended) viewpoint on what's wrong with our society and our government free of the “left” vs. “right” polarizations that tend to skew any factual information they relate. Third, Mr. Howard and his staff have done a rather startling amount of research to bring this book to publication. That is especially surprising given that it's a pretty short book. And for what might otherwise have been rather dry reading, it is instead a very fast read. It is also not a stretch to say that virtually every single page is brimming over with research and examples for points Mr. Howard is making. In fact, it’s the real-world impact of his examples that no only entertain, but educate as well. And just what's so great about the book? Why is it one of my favorite titles of this genre? Basically, the book is about real-life examples of government and regulatory agencies gone bad; about good ideas and well-meaning initiatives for change failing due to bureaucratic entanglements. Everything from goofs at the Federal level and red tape at the state and local level, to the double-edged sword of teacher's unions, the over-blown concept of "rights" and “entitlements” in our society, how regulatory agencies like the EPA, OSHA, FCC, FDA, et al either abuse their power or simply take a good idea too far, and how our legal system has aided and abetted the whole mess. In short, Mr. Howard shows - in innumerable examples - how and why our law- and regulation-heavy society has sunk to the state it has. From the opening chapter, you'll be hooked. In closing, the highest praise I can give this book is that I recommend it to all my friends and relatives. Whether you are a political activist, an American disgruntled with "The System", or even someone who thinks everything is hunky dory, you are bound to find a great deal of eye-opening information and examples you probably never heard of. You will also learn more in-depth information on stories you likely only heard about briefly on the evening news. And because the book is free of political bias, it also makes a great gift (i.e. you won’t have to worry about offending anyone). I can not recommend it enough.
