An excellent self-teaching textbook....His approach is straightforward and his sense of humor refreshing., Every navigator would benefit from having this comprehensive reference book available as a refresher or for new skills., Yes, we have our Chapman and our Bowditch (somewhere), and The Annapolis Book of Seamanship, but it seems to us that the author Frank J. Larkin, in this new edition, makes the subject of piloting and dead reckoning much less daunting and easy to comprehend. Larkin starts at the beginning and takes the reader through the basics of such things as using dividers and a chart, with the kind of useful information sometimes passed over in more sophisticated treatments of the subject. We like that, and we think this 278-page reference is more likely to be read cover-to-cover.

  • Coastal Navigation by Frank J Larking (1998)

I am a former commercial fisherman and Navy veteran. Having spent years at sea, I was taught how to navigate in the sixties using loran and cestial methods. I wanted a book that would allow me to up grade my knowledge using current technologies such as chartplotters with GPS and radar overlays. This book covers that quite well. I would recommend this as a learning tool for the beginner yachtsman or anyone wanting to learn to navigate. jessh1949

  • Great book!

This is a fantastic book to learn coastal navigation and much more! The layout and information presented is far superior to any ASA coastal navigation course at 1/10 the cost. If you complete the detailed individual study courses, you can pass any coastal navigation exam. Great book!
