Director Michael Bay (ARMAGEDDON, THE ROCK) uses a tragic romantic triangle to set the stage for the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in this epic tale of love, loss, and patriotism. When Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale), a beautiful Navy nurse, meets dashing ace Army fighter pilot Rafe (Ben Affleck), the two fall madly in love, only to be separated abruptly when he is called upon to help fight the war in Europe. Unforeseen circumstances lead Evelyn into the arms of Danny (Josh Hartnett), another fighter pilot and Rafe's best friend since childhood. In the meantime, the Japanese military is planning the surprise early morning raid on Hawaii that will pull the United States into World War II. Spectacular special effects vividly recreate the attack in devastating detail as bombs explode, torpedoes shoot through the water, and bullets fly, shaking tranquil Pearl Harbor to its core. Bay deftly captures the patriotism and the loss of innocence of the young men and women who were suddenly thrust into the war. Cuba Gooding, Jr., Jon Voight, Alec Baldwin and Mako also star in this tribute to both the fallen and the survivors of one of the most horrific tragedies ever to occur on American soil.

    If you like extra features, you'll love this one!

    So I bought this because I remembered not really liking it when it first came out. And thanks to Ebay, I could pay almost the same amount to just buy the super special edition as I would to rent it. The case and extra stuff in it are great! This is definitely an "ultimate edition" DVD. The extras on the discs are a mile long. I'm not sure I'll have the energy to watch all of them after watching the 3+ hour movie. Great sound options (DTS and Dolby Digital) and the picture looks to have been remastered expertly. I'm not thrilled that the actual movie is split into 2 discs. I'm sure this was done to enhance an intermission effect, but I found it annoying. DVD technology can easily fit this movie onto 1 disc. All in all, it's a great special edition that's worth the few extra bucks ...

    War movie that’s better than it is given credit for.

    While I do agree that some of the love story leading up to the Pearl Harbor bombing could have been trimmed, it is still a sweet love story, and the Pearl Harbor battle sequences are nothing short of incredible, as is the bombing of Tokyo. A lot of people hate on Michael Bay and Ben Affleck, and sometimes rightfully so, but I believe some of Michael Bay’s movies are hated on for no good reason. Pearl Harbor is a better movie than people give it credit for. The R rating in this edition makes the battle scenes much more intense, and Cuba Gooding Jr. shooting down the Japanese Zero plane is still one of the best scenes in dramatic action film.

    Good story and outstanding SFX

    Pearl Harbor: Using real events as references, this fantasy story is spread out over the opening days of WWII. It was excellent for the subject matter but seemed a bit disjointed at times because too many events seemed to be packed into this one film. Outstanding photography - especially the special effects (!!!!) and music but the actors were limited by the script. Enjoyable to watch but don't get the idea that this is a historically accurate movie. This film (2002 issue) seems to have been cleaned up a bit before formatting to DVD standards so it's probably cleaner than the movie version. Not recommended for children. My reviews are made with no knowledge about a potential seller.

    Review for Pearl Harbor Directors Cut

    I am a big Michael Bay fan and could not find the Pearl Harbor Directors Cut DVD in stores so I turn to eBay. The Directors Cut of Pearl Harbor I have to say is better the theater release, in the fact that the Pearl Harbor battle is a lot longer and yes after seeing the new footage, the Directors Cut is defiantly rated R. There are a lot of graphic images and extra scenes, even worst then "Saving Private Ryan". I like the DVD, I did not think it was that bad of a movie to begin with, but the Directors Cut is a lot better. It is a great DVD and a great movie.
