About this product

Product Information

The first novel in #1 New York Times bestselling author Jan Karon's beloved series set in America's favorite small town: Mitford. It's easy to feel at home in Mitford. In these high, green hills, the air is pure, the village is charming, and the people are generally lovable. Yet, Father Tim, the bachelor rector, wants something more. Enter a dog the size of a sofa who moves in and won't go away. Add an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge. Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that's sixty years old. Suddenly, Father Tim gets more than he bargained for. And readers get a rich comedy about ordinary people and their ordinary lives.

Reviews
Praise for the Mitford Novels "Karon knits Mitford's small-town characters and multiple story lines into a cozy sweater of a book."-- USA Today "Jan Karon reflects contemporary culture more fully than almost any other living novelist."-- Los Angeles Times "Welcome home, Mitford fans...to Karon's gift for illuminating the struggles that creep into everyday lives--along with a vividly imagined world."-- People "Karon offers her readers another chance to escape their own world, if just for a while, and live in the town that 'takes care of its own.' Her readers say they wish Mitford existed so they could move there."-- Richmond Times-Dispatch

    Outstanding Book

The story is one you won’t want to put down! The characters in the book are people you will find yourself thinking about when you’re not reading! When I finish one book, I can’t wait to start the next!!! I have enjoyed them all and I’m starting to reread them!

  • Delightfully Surprising!

I picked this book on a whim, having never heard or read this author. However, the cover description sounded light and a little old fashioned, which was just what I was in the mood for. This book turned out to be one of the best books I've ever read, and the gateway to a series of books written about the magical place called Mitford and the wonderful cast of characters, starring Father Tim. Without being preachy in the least, all the cast of characters are easy to love and take to heart and the reader comes away having learned the lessons in the stories. For a beautiful heart warming read, this is the book to start with!

  • Mitford Series By Jan Karon

I am a 72 year old male and my wife of 52 years started purchasing "The Mitford Series". Knowing how much I enjoyed reading(Action, western and male stuff)She suggested I read Home in Metford Series. You can imagine my initial reaction.. No Way !!but with her steady insistence I started reading the first book. I was hooked and read all the books...What a pleasant suprise. I was born and reared in a small southern village and these books take me back in time..So I would recommend to all those "Moncho Types" that you don't know what your are missing by truning up your noses on these books by Jan Koron. • Good summation; Lets you know it is a type of journal

I had been reading other Christian fiction authors, and was looking for more. A friend told me about Jan Karon, and even let me borrow a few of her books, but could not find the first in the series (this one.) So out of her kindness of letting me borrow the others, I thought I'd do the nice thing and buy her a new/used copy of the first! :) I truly enjoyed it. I will let future readers know, it is a very different type of book. It's good, yes, but it rambles. You don't really see what kind of plot is going on until you're more than halfway (maybe three-fourths?) through the book. But it is definitely worth trudging through all of it. This first book gives sort of a history of the town, and helps set up following books, which have a more definite plot earlier on to find. Enjoy!

  • The first of the series of wonderful books.

A friend recommended that I read this, the first of the Mitford books, about two years ago. It is hard to express how good these books can make you feel about life in general. I read this one, and was hooked, could hardly wait until I got the rest of them. I was so excited about what I had found in Mitford, that I passed that set of books on. Later...I was sorry, I wanted to read them again. I borrowed the second reading books. And have just repurchased the set to read the third time. I love Father Tim and all of the folks in Mitford and later, and I hope you will, too.
