Manufacturer defect excessive shaft center-to-center spacing causes these gears to fail. Gears- OK, shaft spacing lousy which wear soon makes worse.
These gears and the original gears they replaced (which had a different earlier part number) were not and are not defective. However, the mower-drive system into which they fit is clearly and obviously defective in a way that caused the original gear set to fail and is also likely to cause this new replacement gear set to eventually fail in the same way. These two pinon gears are fitted onto the right side and left side of many self-propelled walk-behind mowers. I do not know if this same defect which I'm about to describe exists in many other mowers into which they fit because I have experience with only one 4-cycle LawnBoy which uses them and which failed due to that defect. Space between the two shafts on which the two gears which engage through gear-tooth overlap is too large, ... These gears and the original gears they replaced (which had a different earlier part number) were not and are not defective. However, the mower-drive system into which they fit is clearly and obviously defective in a way that caused the original gear set to fail and is also likely to cause this new replacement gear set to eventually fail in the same way. These two pinon gears are fitted onto the right side and left side of many self-propelled walk-behind mowers. I do not know if this same defect which I'm about to describe exists in many other mowers into which they fit because I have experience with only one 4-cycle LawnBoy which uses them and which failed due to that defect. Space between the two shafts on which the two gears which engage through gear-tooth overlap is too large, probably too large by at least 0.100 of an inch! Only the very tips of the gear teeth overlap and engage. While they are new and unworn, they successfully transfer power between the driving pinion gears and the larger wheel-mounted driven gears. The 10 year old original pinion gear tooth tips wore shorter by about 1/16" of an inch because of this insufficient gear tooth overlap engagement which shortening was sufficient to allow them to spin freely without also spinning the mower wheels. Contributing to that failure cause was wear clearance developed by the wheel mounting axle which also allowed the driven wheel gear to move further away from the driving pinion gear. The basic design is good. The manufacturer's quality of execution in manufacturing this gear drive was lousy. There's no excuse for having such a failure develop after so few operating hours, probably 200 - 250 hours since new used only on level ground on a small yard. Now that the wheel support bearing is worn so the original shaft's center-to-center clearance is even larger than when the mower was new, I expect this replacement gear set to fail in the same way but after fewer hours of use because the originally inadequate gear overlap engagement spacing is now even less. There is a YouTube video showing how one frustrated user disassembled his mower self-propelled by these gears, then hacksaw cut a slot most of the way between those shaft support bearings, then bent that hacksaw cut closed which reduced the clearance between those shafts and enabled adequate tooth-overlap engagement between his mower's driving pinion and wheel-mounted driven gears. Few mower owners are likely to have the skills to allow them to make this simple repair, and of those mower owners with those skills, fewer still are likely to undertake that non-manufacturer-supported corrective action to fix this manufacturing defect. Mower still appears almost like new yet it's self-propel drive gear system is nearly worn out after not many user hours. I expected more from a LawnBoy but perhaps those expectations were based on the excellent durability of LawnBoys manufactured by Outboard Marine Corporation before Toro bought OMC mower division. Toro employs lots of talented mechanical engineers. At minimum, Toro/LawnBoy should now provide free of charge to owners of these mowers a new replacement part which reduces excessive center-to-center shaft spacing between these commonly failing self-propel walk-behind mowers. I'm not suggesting that they cover labor for installing these corrective parts, but just offering those parts with clear installation instructions would go a long way toward improving the reputation of these mowers among opinion leaders such as repair staff at mower service centers. Perfect Parts to Retrofit Your Lawnboy Self Propelled Mower with Metal Gear Drive Wheels
Installed these new pinion gears so I could retrofit my Lawnboy mower with the old style drive wheels with the metal gear. The later model drive wheels with plastic gears are non precision junk that strip teeth making your self propelled mower human propelled. These pinion gears did the job and my mower now works as it should. Shame on Lawnboy/Toro for going from a working design (metal gear drive wheels) to a design that lowers their manufacturing cost and brings in parts revenue selling replacement drive wheels. I have an older Toro lawn mower with the plastic gears in the rear wheels , I have replace the wheels twice because they wear out so fast . So i wanted to replace the wheels with the steel gears but the pinon gear did not mess right , I think the old pinon gear has 12 teeth so i bought these hoping they would work and they did ,the new pinon has more teeth ,,,,,,works great ...........I'm hoping the steel gears last longer then the plastic gears ......I have an older Toro lawn mower with the plastic gears in the rear wheels , I have replace the wheels twice because they wear out so fast .
