Reviews
ACCLAIM FOR FRANCES MAYES'S PREVIOUS BOOKS: "Mayes displays a gift for conveying everyday life in her writing."  -Chicago Tribune   "Mayes's extraordinary sense of visual detail is spiced by her equally acute flair for language." -The Baltimore Sun   "Mayes writes with a poet's attention to sensuous detail."  -Library Journal   "It's easy to understand why Mayes has become a kind of cult figure for seekers of The Good Life.  She not only inspires us to seize the moment, sip the wine and smell the roses, she also makes us feel it is quite possible to transform our lives, just as she did."  -Lexington Herald-Leader, "Those who want to find parts of themselves they didn't know existed, take risks, have an adventure . . . and discover another culture altogether, with its different rhythms, tastes, smells, and ways of being human-those readers will find in Mayes a kindly, eager, tough-spirited guide." -Houston Chronicle "Mayes is a master at capturing a solid sense of place through her lush, poetic narratives." -Orlando Sentinel "It's easy to understand why Mayes has become a kind of cult figure for seekers of The Good Life. She not only inspires us to seize the moment, sip the wine, and smell the roses, she also makes us feel it is quite possible to transform our lives, just as she did." -Lexington Herald-Leader "Mayes displays a gift for conveying everyday life through her writing . . . and presents a simpler, less frantic version of how to live one's life." -USA Today "Frances Mayes is, before all else, a wonderful writer."-Chicago Tribune

  • A Vacation on Paper!

Once again, Frances Mayes takes travel writing to a whole new level. Lyrical, detailed, intelligent -- everything that made Under the Tuscan Sun a classic is here as she and her husband temporarily leave their Tuscan home to explore the wonder and delights of England, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and more. Not only do the places themselves come alive, but so does the food, as the pair literally eat their way around the map. It's the sort of book you need a whole afternoon or evening in order to do it justice. Unfortunately, I had to read in small bites until the last four chapters. But those -- ah, finally! -- a chance to sit back and savor.

  • Another "Must Read" by Frances Mayes!!

I love, love, love this book! Again, Ms. Mayes takes us with her, wherever she goes! This book is another First Class Ticket to Europe and the Mediterranean - The food, the people; diverse cultures and their history! A fabulous book for all ages, anytime of year!

  • A Year in the World by Frances Mayes

A very tedious read after enjoying Under the Tuscan Sun and In Tuscany so very much. I could not bear to put her books about Tuscany down and carried them around with me everywhere. Not this one, just forced myself to finish it.
