Great addition to expand an existing Orbi AC3000 system

Great for those that already have an Orbi AC3000 mesh router system and just want to add a satellite to their network setup. I bought this specifically to put in my son's room in order to use the built-in ethernet ports to set up a wired connection for his gaming systems. I was actually surprised in speed tests how much better using the wired ethernet ports on the satellite were compared to using wi-fi alone (particularly since the Orbi system still uses a wireless connection between the router and the satellites). I found that using a wired connection on the satellites is about 50% faster in throughput than a wireless wi-fi connection.

Not as good as I hoped

I got this hoping to provide high speed connectivity throughout my house however thecspeed, while fairly consistent, is roughly 1/3 of what my previous router provided (albeit without the coverage area). Additionally, connectivity is not consistent with drops and reconnect throughout the fay.

  • Great way to extend & strengthen existing Orbi network

I have an Orbi router + satellite in my 1920s house with plaster & lath walls, so signal propagation was not great - especially in my home office. Netgear charges a ridiculous amount for add-on satellites if you buy one new. I even thought about buying another router + satellite (which is often cheaper than an add-on satellite alone!) and toss the router, but that seemed too wasteful. So buying the satellite used seemed like a much better option. At first it worked ok, but was kind of flaky. I had to play with it a while before I figured out how to connect to the satellite directly - when it was working with the router and I connected via my browser, it would spin for a long time and refused to accept my password. I finally did a factory reset, removed it from the router's config, and ...

  • I have wireless extended my internet 100s of feet away from the source!

Decent mesh solution if you can get the config right. Make sure daisy-chain is ALWAYS OFF. The network is always very unstable with this setting turned on, but with it disabled it seems to be very solid. Also, you have to be patient on boot up, changes, or physically moving the units around. You may find yourself frustrated because it's not working and then try something else, but take it from me, give it some time to "settle" before you make another chage.

  • Checks off ALL the boxes - achieve the goal!

Just what I was looking for. We have an early (gen 1) Orbi RBR50 system with one satellite. Goal was to expand the system with a second satellite. Not hard to set up with the Orbi admin portal. Established a good backhaul to the base. Amazingly, despite a weakish signal on that floor, it's achieving max throughput of my Fios connection with low latency. Orbi magic!
